Urban Developer: Adrian Myer believes that everyone has a responsibility to take care of others and to strengthen their communities. That value has been reinforced at Emory & Henry, where he has participated in service projects for Habitat for Humanity and Project Glade, a revitalization project for Glade Spring, Va. His experiences both in and out of the classroom have motivated him to pursue a career that will allow him to “have an impact on people’s lives.”

His experiences both in and out of the classroom have motivated him to pursue a career that will allow him to “have an impact on people’s lives.”

A sociology and geography double major, Myer wants to pursue a career in urban development—possibly starting with a graduate program in community organization and leadership. A study abroad course in Germany last summer gave him the opportunity to study economics and sustainability while getting a taste of European culture. The experience was enlightening, he says, opening his eyes to new perspectives and offering fresh insights into U.S. culture.

“When I graduate, I want to be out there making a difference in the community where I’m living,” says Myer, who has formed close connections with his professors as well as fellow students. “Emory & Henry has been the perfect community because of the connections I’ve made here, with my professors and with other students. I want to be able to give back to my community, build sustainable relationships that last a lifetime, and make it possible for others to have opportunities I’ve had.”
