Library 101: Current Acquisitions

Everyone will probably be too busy to do much leasurely reading as those final projects and papers start to overwhelm them, but the Library has a few newer things to read, and watch, that might provide some relaxation and diversion.  The DVDs might not be newly released, but they are goodies. 10 things I hate about you.  DVD PN1997 .T352  A loose adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew set in a modern Seattle high school.

Then one day, Mark becomes so desperate he concocts a lie that is believed with total and absolute gullibility. Mark can get anything he wants. La Bamba.  DVD  PN1997 .B237  The life of rock and roll legend Richie Valens bursts across the screen in this celebrated, music-filled movie with star-making performances. Depicts the 17-year-old Mexican-American's rocket rise to fame from field laborer to rock star.

Superheroes: a never-ending battle.  DVD NC1764 .S87 2013  Examines the dawn of the comic book genre and its progenitors, as well as the evolution of the characters that leapt from the pages over the last 70 years and their ongoing worldwide cultural impact. It chronicles how these 'disposable diversions' were subject to intense government scrutiny for their influence on American children and how they were created in large part by immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation of a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Sisterland / Curtis Sittenfeld.  Best Sellers  PS3619.I94 S57 2013  When the strongest earthquake in U.S. history occurs just north of their St. Louis home, Kate and Jeremy find the disaster further complicated by Kate's self-proclaimed-medium twin's prediction about a more powerful earthquake, a situation that places Kate under public scrutiny and reveals her own psychic abilities.
