Federal Plus Loan
There are two types of Federal PLUS loans. Those types are the parent PLUS Loan and the GRAD PLUS Loan. The parent PLUS loan is for parents of undergraduate students. The yearly limit on a parent PLUS Loan is equal to the undergraduate student's cost of attendance less any other financial aid received. The GRAD PLUS Loan is for graduate students only and can supplement other financial resources up to the cost of attendance. These loans are subject to a federal origination fee assessed at the time of disbursement.
PLUS loans have a fixed interest rate under the Direct Loan Program. Payments usually begin 60 days after loan is fully disbursed each year. While interest begins to accumulate at the time the first disbursement is made, borrowers have the option of making interest only payments or deferring all payments so long as the student is enrolled at least half-time for up to a period of four years. Borrowers must contact the lender directly to arrange a forbearance. Either of these choices will result in more interest being paid if only minimum payments are made during repayment. Average monthly payment is approximately $50 per month for every $4,000 borrowed.
Parents can access directions for completeing the PLUS loan process on the Financial Aid Forms page. Approval for this loan is dependent upon satisfactory credit.
Graduate students may be eligible on a case-by-case basis for a Grad PLUS loan. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.
