E&H to Inaugurate 21st President April 25
Apr 25th, 2014
King Health and Physical Education Center
The ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m. in the King Center on the E&H campus, will include an inaugural address delivered by James T. Laney, former U.S. ambassador to South Korea and president emeritus of Emory University in Atlanta.
Participating in the presidential investiture will be two of Schrum’s predecessors, Dr. Rosalind Reichard, the 20th president of Emory & Henry, and Dr. Thomas R. Morris, the 19th president of the College.
Schrum, who began his presidency in August 2013, previously served as president of two institutions in Texas: Southwestern University and Texas Wesleyan University.
During his tenure at Southwestern, Schrum led a record-setting $150 million fundraising campaign and launched the institution’s signature Paideia Program, which helps students integrate what they learn in the classroom with outside experiences, such as civic engagement, intercultural learning and research.
During his nine years as president of Texas Wesleyan, the university’s endowment more than doubled (from $22 million to $50 million), the enrollment increased from 1,429 to 3,000 students, and the annual budget grew from $11 million to $32 million.
Laney served as dean of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University before being selected as president of Emory University in 1977. As president, he fostered a vision of learning and leadership and was instrumental in the creation of Emory University’s Center for Ethics in 1991.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Laney as U.S. ambassador to South Korea. He served in that post until 1996, when he was named a special presidential envoy in East Asia through 1999.
