Around 30 alums returned to campus on January 19 to renew friendships and recall their days on the court as members of the E&H Men’s Basketball Team. Additionally, several family members came along to enjoy the fun, and just before the “alumni hoops” match, which took alumni back to the boards for a friendly game, Terrance Grigg’s (E&H 2011) mom smiled and  said, “We came to see if he still has it!”

Based on the running, shooting, scoring and sweating…all the guys in the game still had it!

Head E&H Men’s Basketball Coach Paul Russo, E&H class of 2003, put aside his coaching duties long enough to play with the guys. Jarrell Christian, E&H Class of 2009, was on campus for dual purposes: he is an E&H basketball alum, but he’s also an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon – the team the Wasps played later that same afternoon. Justin Call, E&H Class of 2004 and winner of the 2004 Jostens National  Trophy seemed to enjoy a break from coaching at East Wilke High School for the opportunity to play at E&H again.

Guys who are now coaches, elementary school teachers, and finance gurus all dropped their post-Emory personas to just be players for awhile…and it was great fun to watch. The only people who seemed to have more fun than the guys playing were they guys who sat out the game and razzed the alumni teams!

Current members of the E&H team came by the Porterfield Lounge in the King Center to greet alumni players during lunch. And after lunch, alumni had a chance to hear from Coach Russo who seemed especially pleased to see some of the guys back who had played for him. Coach Russo took over the job in 2007.

Jay Rosser, E&H Class of 2003, travelled in from New York City to be part of the day, and gets much of the credit for helping Coach Russo put on this now-annual event. Jay vividly remembers how important it was to him as a student player to meet alumni from the program, and now that he is the alumnus, he wants to give back to the program in a meaningful manner.
