California Assembly Leader and E&H Alumna to Deliver Commencement Address

Roanoke, Virginia native, who currently serves as Majority Leader in the California State Assembly, will deliver the commencement address, part of a commemoration of the 176th anniversary of the school. This will also be the last public event for E&H President Rosalind Reichard, who plans to retire at the end of June.

The Honorable Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), Assembly member representing California’s 78th district, will address the 2013 graduating class. Atkins was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2010. She previously served as a member of the San Diego City Council, a position she held from 2000-2008, and was acting mayor in 2005. A 1984 graduate of Emory & Henry College, Atkins majored in political science. She has also completed the senior executive program at the prestigious John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

The 165th Commencement Ceremonies of Emory & Henry College will be held Saturday, May 4 on the South Lawn of Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m.

The baccalaureate service will be held in Memorial Chapel Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m. The Rev. Walter Weikel, a 1984 graduate of Emory & Henry College and district superintendent for the Johnson City District of the Holston Conference, United Methodist Church, will be the featured speaker. Members of the Class of 2013 are encouraged to attend this interfaith worship service in celebration of their accomplishments with family, friends, and the College community.

In the event of rain, the commencement ceremony will be held on the Emory & Henry College campus. There is no limit on the number of guests who can attend if the event is held outdoors on campus. A tent suitable for 2000 graduates and guests will be erected in the event of rain, but they may want to bring umbrellas.
