Three Emory & Henry College students were honored by the American Advertising Federation during a ceremony recently at the General Francis Marion Hotel in Marion, Va.
The American Advertising Awards Competition is a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation. The competition, which includes categories for college students, is the advertising industry's largest and most representative competition for creative excellence.
E&H student Kali Gentry, earned a gold “Addy” award in the college student competition for her publication “Increase Magazine.” Gentry of Chilhowie is a junior majoring in mass communications and minoring in graphic design. Her winning publication design will move on to compete against other students from Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina in the district-level competition held in Cary, N.C.
“Designing this project was no easy task,” said Gentry. After several different drafts and cups of coffee, I'm extremely pleased with the way it turned out.”
Silver awards in the college student competition were presented to Sheree Hairston from Martinsville for her “Greekology Magazine” cover and to Sarah Knight of Jonesborough, Tenn., for her work on “Expedition Magazine.” Hairston is a senior majoring in sociology with a minor in mass communications. Knight is a senior majoring in mass communications.
The winning entries from E&H students were completed as part of Dr. Tracy Lauder’s advanced publication design class in the fall of 2013. Lauder, associate professor of mass communications, served as professor and advisor to the students. At the culmination of the course, publications, campaigns, logos and other collaterals were evaluated before a panel of advertising professionals.
