Nearly 1,000 high school students will converge at Chilhowie High School on Saturday, Sept. 27, for the 62nd Annual Chilhowie Apple Festival Band Competition.

These students will be greeted by the Emory & Henry College Music Department, who for the first time this year, will be partnering with the band competition.

The annual event, which begins at 2 p.m., is Southwest Virginia/Northeast Tennessee’s longest continuously running competition, having originated in 1953. High school bands from the tri-state region of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia will be competing.

Emory & Henry College students will be on hand to assist competitors by ushering them from the warm-up area to the field, assisting with the parking of busses and providing support for other logistics.

Chilhowie Band director Logan Childress and E&H music professor Dr. Matt Frederick spearheaded the partnership between the College and festival band competition, and they hope this opportunity helps student’s appreciate the impact they have on the surrounding community.

“Being involved in community endeavors such as this festival are important for the Music Department as well as the College, and being able to celebrate these talented students will be a great experience for everyone,” Frederick said.

The Emory & Henry College Admissions office also will be on hand to help answer questions about how the College’s quality music is combined with a strong foundation in the liberal arts.

Awards will be given in the categories of music, marching, general effect, auxiliaries, percussion, drum major, class ranking and band rating. The band with the highest score in each class division will receive the title of division champion. The band with the highest overall score for the day will receive the title of grand champion along with the associated trophy.
