Tuition dollars spent by the frugally minded College student go a bit farther at Emory & Henry College than they do at most top private institutions in the South, according to a new value ranking done by the editors of Great Value Colleges.

Great Value Colleges ranked Emory & Henry 11th among the top schools in the South – and was ranked highest among Virginia schools -- with the "Best Affordability." Berea College in Kentucky finished first on the list, followed by Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., which was the only Tennessee school to make the top 25.

Other Virginia schools ranked in the top 25 for private schools were Washington and Lee (Lexington, Va.) at 13th and the University of Richmond (Richmond, Va.) at 19th.

How They Were Judged

The ranking was limited to schools with the highest academic rankings according to Forbes magazine. The ranking then looked at seven other categories: 6-year graduation rate, freshmen retention rate, student-to-faculty ratio, percentage of classes entrusted to graduate assistants, average entrance ACT score, number of campus organizations, and number of academic programs.

In addition to praising Emory & Henry for its affordability, the editors of Great Value Colleges commended the College for its history, beauty and academic rigor.

The campus is teeming with architectural beauty and is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Register of Historic Landmarks. You can hike the nearby Appalachian and Iron Mountain Trails, explore the Jefferson and George Washington National Forests, and paddle up the multiple nearby rivers.Great Value Colleges

The website also pointed to the College’s encouragement that students complete a senior project and capstone seminar in the topic of their choice.
