As associate director of public relations, I direct the design and branding of all college external print and electronic communications, advertising and related marketing materials. This includes production of print materials and oversight of the College’s graphic identity to ensure consistent branding, design and style, in support of strategic communications and marketing initiatives for key constituents including institutional advancement, admissions, the arts and others. I serve as editor and art director of the college alumni magazine and provide design and content support for the college website.
From 1997 to 2013, I served Emory & Henry as director of publications, then was promoted to associate director of public relations in 2013. While continuing as director of publications, my position also includes increased involvement in marketing and planning, as well as supervisory duties for PR assistants and work study employees. The associate director performs the duties of the director of public relations in his absence.
Before coming to Emory & Henry, I served as associate director of a non-profit serving 13 counties, where I worked for 11 years. For three years I was a public relations specialist for DMV's traffic safety program which served the 16 counties in Southwest Virginia. My duties in both of these positions included public relations and media relations as well as educational promotions on public safety issues. I organized regional media and educational events, worked with local media in developing public service announcements and produced safety-related newsletters. In addition, I lead regional volunteer committees and served on state-wide committees for EMS and traffic safety, and wrote and administered grants.
Other highlights of my career include numerous awards for design from national and international design and journalism organizations, most recently (2015) for editing and design of the E&H alumni magazine. Emory & Henry has presented me with the E&H Maiden Award (2011), the highest staff recognition at the college, and two staff Blue & Gold Awards.
I am the United Way Campaign representative for Emory & Henry and vice-president of the E&H College Community Club. I serve on the editorial committee of the regional arts publication, A! Magazine for the Arts, and am a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the University and College Designers Association. Community involvement includes secretary of the Friends of Smyth Chapel (a group charged with restoring the historic building), member of the Depot Artists Association and other non-profit groups involved in children's, women's and diversity issues.
