Vision Statement

Our vision is to provide life-long learning, information activities and environments for independent study and self-directed, interactive and collaborative learning. In partnership with the College faculty, we will support academic excellence for current and anticipated instructional programs. We will lead the College in the acquisition and management of information resources and in the creative and effective use of new technologies. We will serve as a student-centered library in which quality services and student success are primary goals recognized and shared by all staff.

Mission Statement

The Emory & Henry College Department of Library and Information Services is a learning environment which responds to the traditional values of a liberal arts education and to the realities of modern technology.

At the intellectual heart of the campus, the Frederick T. Kelly Library is the locus where scholarly information, regardless of format, is gathered, organized and prepared for dissemination to the college community. The Kelly Library provides a place for interaction, collaboration, consultation, study, and reflection. The Kelly Library fosters the pursuit of knowledge, intellectual and ethical integrity, excellence in teaching and learning, respect for inquiry and diverse points of view, and dedication to service. Librarians and staff support the College's educational mission:

  • by creating and providing the tools that provide access to universal knowledge
  • by teaching library research skills and the critical evaluation and synthesis of information
  • by developing, organizing and maintaining a collection of resources supporting the curriculum of the College, intellectual freedom, and cultural exploration
  • by offering the College expertise on changing patterns in the creation, organization, and distribution of knowledge
  • by cooperating with area and regional libraries in providing information resources to the Appalachian region as well as supporting the intellectual and recreational information needs of the broader community

The mission of the Information Technology Services Department at Emory & Henry College is to provide and support the academic and administrative technology initiatives and needs of the College. We will provide integrated technological support for all College educational, administrative and student support services in a receptive and courteous manner. Via ongoing research and development, the Information Services Department will take the lead in identifying, testing and integrating new technologies and formats for the College community in support of the College's academic mission. Additionally, the Information Services Department will provide ongoing leadership and faculty and staff educational opportunities in instructional technology techniques and initiatives.

Technical Services

  1. The goal of Technical Services is to select, organize and maintain the resources and materials which support the teaching, research and public service programs of the College.
    1. The objective is to improve efficiency in the acquisition and processing of information resources and materials.
      1. Identify measurable outcomes to assess and evaluate workflows and develop an evaluation tool to do so.
      2. Using the evaluation tool(s), assess and evaluate workflows and procedures.
      3. Using the results of the evaluation, restructure workflows to improve efficiency.
      4. Reassess and refine changed workflows for improved efficiency
    1. The objective is to more fully utilize current and future technology-enhanced tools to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
      1. Assess and evaluate currently-available technology-enhanced tools for possible integration.
      2. Integrate chosen technology tools into workflows
      3. Evaluate the performance of new workflows
      4. Adjust workflows accordingly
    1. The objective is to provide access to all materials through the online public access catalog (OPAC).
      1. Identify and isolate all materials not currently included in the catalog for processing
      2. Develop strategies for processing these materials
      3. Implement the processing strategy
      4. Develop & implement an ongoing plan for handling future materials
    1. The objective is to assure that the library's collections adequately support the educational goals of the College.
      1. Continually analyze and evaluate the library collections including both virtual and print resources to ensure that the collection supports the current curriculum needs of the College.
      2. Develop an objective tool for allocating book budget funds to support all College academic disciplines
      3. Work with consortial academic partners to provide cooperative collection development and access to a wider variety of electronic resources and to the region's special collections.

Public Services

  1. The goal of Public Services is to provide appropriate levels of service to all library clients.
  1. The objective is to assure that the library's services adequately fulfill the needs of the user groups of the College library.
  1. Identify user groups and assess their service needs and expectations.
  2. Establish service level standards for each service delivered.
  3. Implement the service standards and priorities based on the results of user needs assessments
  4. Use the results of user needs assessments and the establishment of service standards to develop performance measures and annual goals.
  1. The objective is to assure that the library's staff is adequately trained to fulfill the information services needs of the College community.
  1. Identify what constitutes appropriate standards of service in circulation, reference, interlibrary loan, and access to collections.
  2. Conduct an assessment of training and/or cross-training needs.
  3. Develop training materials and identify training opportunities to assure that every staff member has adequate training.
  4. Implement training procedures.
  5. Implement an ongoing evaluation & training cycle.
  1. The goal of Public Services is to provide opportunities for life-long learning through the integration of library services into the teaching, learning and research processes in formats which support multiple learning style.
  1. The objective is to identify the various user groups in need of information literacy instruction.
  1. Identify the user groups which constitute our library community.
  2. Assess and evaluate the information literacy needs of these user groups.
  1. The objective is to assure that identified user groups gain demonstrable information literacy skills in support of lifelong learning.
    1. Define and evaluate what constitutes information literacy skills which support lifelong learning.
    2. Create instructional programs and self-paced, interactive, digital instructional modules for basic and advanced information skills.
    3. Assess and evaluate the skill levels of the users receiving literacy instruction though the use of these modules and materials.
    4. Implement an ongoing evaluation and instruction cycle.
  1. The goal of Public Services is to provide user-friendly access to current information resources organized into collections which support the educational goals of the College.
    1. The objective is to constantly analyze and manage the library's collections to support changes to the College curriculum.
  1. Maintain an active weeding and de-selection program in order to support the zero-growth policy necessitated by space restrictions in the library.
  2. Collaborate with various consortia partners to share information resources and collection assets to minimize duplication of resources.
  3. Collaborate with students and faculty to solicit input in order to ensure that the specific research needs of students are met.
  1. The objective is to provide the greatest and least restrictive access to all print and digital collection formats available in our collections.
  2. Investigate methods for providing integrated access to digital scholarly information.
  3. Procure and implement an integrated web-based access interface to all available information resources.
  4. Develop and provide remote patron access to all available digital resources.

Information Services

  1. The goal of Information Services is to provide appropriate levels of technology support and services to students, current teaching faculty, the administration and the library.
  1. The objective is to assure that Help Desk Services adequately fulfills the technology needs of the defined user groups.
  1. Establish service level standards for Help Desk services.
  2. Develop and create policies and procedures for Help Desk services.
  3. Investigate and implement an integrated assets management system.
  4. Develop training materials and identify training opportunities to assure that every staff member has adequate training.
  5. Implement the service standards and priorities based on the results of user needs assessments
  6. Use the results of user needs assessments and satisfaction surveys to develop ongoing performance measures and goals.
  1. The objective is to assure that Hardware/Software support services provide adequate technology support to the College's technology needs.
  1. Provide hardware and software support to Help Desk services.
  2. Develop training materials and identify training opportunities to assure that every staff member has adequate training in hardware and software support.
  3. Maintain current levels of hardware and software technology.
  4. Support and maintain the campus computer labs.
  1. The objective is to assure that Information Services maintains a stable and reliable integrated network environment.
  1. Maintain up-to-date hardware and software network assets to ensure adequate access to electronic mail, digital storage, and telecommunications assets.
  2. Develop training materials and identify training opportunities to assure that every staff member has adequate training in network technology.
  1. The objective is to assure that Information Services provides access to and training for a reliable state-of-the-art integrated administrative system.
  1. Work within the Independent College Enterprise consortium to complete the implementation of the Datatel administrative system.
  2. Provide adequate training and support to defined user groups.
  3. Provide Help Desk support services for the administrative system

  1. The goal of Information Services is to provide ongoing leadership, research and educational opportunities in instructional technology methods and initiatives.

      2. Design and implement instructional technology curriculum for the faculty
      3. Serve as a professional resource to the Education Department.
      4. Research innovative instructional technology methods for possible integration.
      5. Provide strategic planning support in relation to instructional technology initiatives.
      6. Evaluate and refine the instructional technology resources of the College.
    1. The objective is to provide up-to-date training modules and materials to the defined user groups.
      1. Survey the defined user groups to identify training needs.
      2. Design and create training modules and materials related to user needs.
      3. Provide training.
      4. Evaluate effectiveness of training and training materials.
    1. The objective is to coordinate the facilities of the state-of-the-art telelearning center.
      1. Act as liaison to the Southwest Virginia Educational Teaching Network consortium.
      2. Actively seek new funding opportunities to support instructional technology initiatives.
      3. Research new technologies for incorporation into the Center.

Administration

  1. The goal of the Library and Information Services administration is to provide vision and leadership in the planning and management of the College's information resources.
    1. The objective is to manage human resources and physical facilities effectively to support the resources and services provided by the library and information services department.
      1. Analyze staffing patterns across the department and investigate ways to improve utilization of its human resources.
        1. Seek additional needed positions.
        2. Reallocate existing positions.
        3. Cross-train to meet temporary or special needs
      1. Support ways to improve salaries for departmental employees by auditing positions regularly.
      2. Support better opportunities for staff advancement or positions.
      3. Maintain and improve physical facilities to accommodate the changing needs of the users and staff.
      4. Continuously evaluate building infrastructure assets in support of the technology needs of the College.
    1. The objective is to establish procedures for the systematic review of policies and procedures of the library and information services department.
      1. Conduct an annual review and editing of the library and information services strategic plan.
      2. Develop, conduct and evaluate an annual user satisfaction survey of departmental services.
      3. Conduct continuous evaluation of all departmental policies such as circulation, reserve, collection development, and other library policies, and information services network acceptable use policy.
    1. The objective is to forecast trends and issues facing library and information services and develop policies, procedures and budgets in anticipation of these changes.
      1. Propose an annual budget for the department and submit it to the administration for consideration.
      2. Prepare an extensive annual report of all departmental activities including the activities of the professional staff members.
      3. Advise the College administration of upcoming issues and challenges in library and information services and make recommendations for action.
